The Secretary-General of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, Dr. Ali al-Qaradaghi, has decried the Assad regime’s recent attempts to erase evidence of a mass grave in the town of Babila in rural Damascus. Dr. al-Qaradaghi labeled this act as a flagrant violation of human rights and international law.
Taking to Twitter, Dr. al-Qaradaghi asserted that the regime’s move to obscure the traces of the crime and manipulate the truth constitutes a grave injustice to the victims and their families. He stressed that these actions thwart their right to know the fate of their loved ones and seek justice, further describing it as a painful blow to international justice standards. This denouncement comes over a decade after the initial discovery of the mass grave.
Emphasizing the Assad regime’s callousness towards evidence of its forces’ heinous crimes, Dr. al-Qaradaghi underscored the regime’s brutal and extremist nature. He reiterated that evildoers cannot evade accountability for their monstrous deeds.
“We cannot permit the dismissal or neglect of war crimes and human rights violations within Syria,” Dr. al-Qaradaghi declared. He passionately urged the global community to persist in investigating these atrocities and holding the responsible parties accountable.
In a parallel response, the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) echoed these sentiments, highlighting the Assad regime’s recent efforts to transfer the bodies of executed civilians from the Babila mass grave to an undisclosed location. This attempt, according to the SOC, underscores the Assad regime’s disregard for Syrian lives and its evident fear that the traces of these crimes might eventually lead to legal consequences.
