The Assad regime forces shelled residential areas in the countryside of Hama, Idlib and Aleppo with heavy artillery and rockets as the United Nations reached the final stages of the launch of the Constitutional Committee. The Syrian Coalition said that these violations provided yet further proof of the Assad regime’s deliberate military escalation whenever there is a renewed push for political settlement.
Local media outlets said that the Assad regime forces renewed violations of the Idlib agreement and shelled residential neighborhoods in the town of Latamina in northern rural Hama with heavy artillery and rockets. Regime forces also launched similar attacks on nearby villages, casing civilian casualties and massive destruction to residential neighborhoods.
The town of Mansoura in southern rural Aleppo came under artillery fire by the Assad regime forces, while the town of Jarjanaz and the outskirts of the town of Haas in rural Idlib were hit by rockets.
Member of the Syrian Coalition’s political Committee, Okab Yahya, earlier said that the Assad regime continues to refuse to engage seriously in the political process as is evidenced by its repeated shelling of the liberated areas as well as the continued arrest of civilians and torturing them to death.
Yahya said that military escalation is one of the tools the Assad regime uses to cause chaos and dodge its political obligations, as is evidenced now in its attempts to disrupt the process of the launch of the constitutional committee.
“The Assad regime has not accepted any political solution and refuses to meet the demands of the Syrian people which were at their minimum in the early days of the revolution,” Yahya said. He blamed the Assad regime for all the devastation, suffering, and the ongoing carnage in Syria, noting that Assad sees in any concessions the beginning of the end of his rule. .
