Detainees in the Assad regime’s Hama Central Prison issued an appeal to international human rights organizations to take urgent action to save them from death following the Assad regime’s recent issuance of death sentences against them for taking part in peaceful demonstrations.
Syrian activists published a voice message by one of the detainees who were sentenced to death. The detainee said that his only crime for which he would be executed was taking part in a peaceful demonstration and calling for freedom. He stressed that he did not kill or cause harm to anyone.
The detainee added that he was detained by the Assad regime’s forces seven years ago and remained in Sednaya Prison near Damascus for several years before he was moved to Hama Central Prison. He will be now returned to Sednaya Prison for execution.
A total of 40 detainees will be moved to Sednaya Prison near Damascus, including 11 who were detained for taking part in peaceful demonstrations. They had been sentenced to death in 2016, but the execution was not implemented at the time because of the mutiny the detainees had staged at the prison back then.
The detainee called for urgent action to save them from behind the bars. He appealed to international human rights organizations and all Syrians saying: “Saving the lives of those sentenced to death is the responsibility of the entire Syrian people.”
Detainees in Hama Central Prison staged a mutiny inside the facility in early May 2016 to demand the repealing of the death sentences issued against a number of them. The Assad regime forces rejected their demands at the time.
The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) said in a report issued yesterday that at least 95,000 Syrians have been forcefully disappeared in Syria since the beginning of the revolution in March 2011.
On February 7, 2017, Amnesty International issued a report under the title “The Human Slaughterhouse” in which it revealed that the Assad regime had hanged 13,000 detainees in Sednaya Prison, mostly civilians who were opposed to the regime.
