Mohiaddin Binanah, interim Minister of Education, said that the Syrian people have a natural for learning as they insist on educating their children despite the regime’s deliberate targeting of schools and universities during a meeting with a European delegation. Binanah gave a detailed explanation of the reality of education in Syrian schools and the difficulties facing the development of the work of the ministry. He also pointed to the Ministry’s efforts to take care of Syrian students and to provide them with education despite all obstacles facing the educational process. UNICEF estimates that 3.5 million Syrian children are in need of education. Binanah called for the delegation to contribute in supporting the educational process in a particular aspect or a specific area in the Syrian cities, as a single country cannot provide all the necessary support needed for helping Syrian children continue their education. The meeting discussed the subject of recognition by the European countries of the high school certificates issued by the interim Ministry of Education. The Turkish government has already recognized these certificates, and it is expected that France would follow suit. Furthermore, the interim Minister discussed with the visiting delegation providing scholarships for Syrian students by European universities based on the results of this year’s exams which will be overseen by specialists and experts from a number of advanced countries. Abdul Rahman al-Haj, adviser to the interim Prime Minister and Fawaz Al Awwad, Deputy Prime provided statistics about the damaged schools, the teaching staff, the number of affected students, and the needs of the educational process.
