Interim government to Import 250,000 Tons of Wheat

The Interim Ministry of Finance and Economy has assumed responsibility for management of the grain silos in the liberated areas in Dara’a province. Hassan Al-Mohammad, head of the General Administration for Grain said this move would “partially enhance food security in the liberated areas. The administration’s staff based in Syria have sufficient expertise in solving problems facing the grain sector. At a meeting included representatives of all the revolutionary forces in Dara’a province, participants stressed the need to protect the grain silos and also to make more efforts to provide the people with bread at the lowest cost. The interim Ministry of Finance and Economy said it seeks to institutionalize the process of receiving and delivering grain in areas beyond the control of Assad through cooperation with the revolutionary, civilian and military forces. The Syrian interim government is discussing with the representatives of donor countries a project to import 250,000 tons of wheat through global markets. Hassan al-Mohammad, said that the General Administration of Grain had purchased approximately 20,000 tons of wheat in four Syrian provinces, while anti-revolutionary forces prevent the delivery of wheat for areas outside the control of the Assad regime.
