The Syrian Network for Human Rights said that Syrian journalist Jihad Jamal died under torture in the prisons of the Assad regime eight years after his arrest.
The Network said that it had obtained information on April 13th of the death of Jamal under torture at one of the Assad regime’s detention centers in Damascus. It also learnt that Jamal’s family had obtained information from the Civil Registry Department back in February that he had died in 2016.
The Network added that Jamal, 44 at the time of his death, was detained by the Assad regime forces on March 7, 2012 in the Ninar cafe in the Bab Sharqi neighborhood of Damascus and was taken to the Palestine Security Branch.
In its latest report, the Network said that at least 14,221 people have been killed under torture in the Assad regime’s prisons since March 2011, adding that 129,989 people are still under arrest or enforced disappearance in detention centers.
The news about Jamal’s death came amid continued international calls for the release of detainees in Syria amid fear of the spread of the coronavirus among the detainees, especially in view of the inhumane conditions allowing the spread of the virus. (Source: SOC’s Media Department)
