The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) said that it had recorded the deaths of 91 medical workers and civil defense volunteers in around 198 attacks on their facilities across Syria in 2018.
In a report released Sunday, the Network said that at least 53 medical personnel, 37 civil defense volunteers, and one volunteer of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC) were killed across Syria in 2018. It noted that the majority of those were killed in attacks by the Assad regime forces and their allied militias.
The monitoring group said that 33 medical workers were killed in attacks by the Assad regime and the Iranian terrorist organizations, while five others were killed in airstrikes by the Russian forces. It noted that eight others were killed by unidentified militant groups, four in attacks by the international anti-ISIS coalition forces, two by the ISIS extremist group, and one by the PYD militia.
The report indicated that the Assad regime forces and their allied militias killed 20 members of the civil defense in 2018, while the Russian forces killed eight others. It noted that eight more were killed by unidentified militant groups and one by the PYD militia.
The Network went on to say that the Assad forces and their allies attacked 60 medical facilities, three ambulances, 37 civil defense centers and five SARC centers in 2018.
The Network also said that it had recorded 105 attacks on humanitarian facilities by regime forces, 56 others by the Russian forces, 30 by unidentified militant groups, and five by the international coalition forces.
The SNHR said that the attacks constituted a blatant violation of the Customary International Humanitarian Law and UN Security Council resolutions 2139 and 2254 calling for an end to indiscriminate attacks on vital civilian centers. The attacks also violated UN Security Council resolution 2286 calling for an end to violations and attacks on medical personnel and equipment as well as against hospitals and other medical facilities.
