The Action Group for the Palestinians of Syria on Tuesday appealed to the United Nations as well as international and humanitarian organizations to ratchet up pressure on the Assad regime to force it to release detainees and disclose the fate of the enforcedly disappeared.
The Group said that war crimes are taking place inside the Assad regime’s detention centers, “but all these have not yet caught the attention of international organizations.” It called for the disclosure of the fate of hundreds of detainees and those forcibly disappeared in the prisons of the Assad regime.
According to the Group’s Monitoring and Documentation Team, about 572 Palestinian-Syrians had died under torture in the prisons of the Assad regime. It said that it has compiled a list of the names of 1,730 Palestinian-Syrians who are currently held by the Assad regime.
The London-based monitoring group said that Palestinian-Syrians are subjected to the same violations their Syrian brethren are suffering, namely murder, forced displacement, and enforced disappearance.
The Monitoring and Documentation Team earlier said that no fewer than 265 Palestinian-Syrians from Dara’a camp have been killed since the start of the Syrian revolution in March 2011.
Former detainees talked about the gross violations and brutal torture detainees are enduring in the Assad regime’s detention facilities. Huda, the pseudonym of a woman who has recently been released from the prisons of the regime, gave harrowing details of the atrocities and torture women in the prisons of the Assad regime are subjected to.
The real number of detainees and victims of torture is much greater than the estimates rights group usually announce given the refusal of the Assad regime’s security apparatuses to give information about the detainees. In addition, many families of detainees and victims of torture prefer not speak about these violations for fear of reprisal by the Assad regime’s security forces.
