The Assad regime forces continue to breach the ceasefire in the areas covered by the ‘de-escalation zone’ agreement in northwestern Syria. Renewed shelling by the Assad regime on Jabal al-Zawiya in southern rural Idlib forced dozens of households to flee the region in the past 24 hours.
Civilians are fleeing towards relatively safer towns and villages as well as to IDP camps located further to the north.
The Emergency Response Coordinators Team in Syria warned that the military escalation would force more civilians to flee towards the already overcrowded IDP camps in the north. Civilians suffering will be compounded by lack of protection in view of the detection of new cases of infection with the coronavirus in the region.
The people of Jabal al-Zawiya region are suffering from repeated violations by the Assad regime forces and their allied militias of the ceasefire agreement which was reached by Turkey and Russia on March 5.
