The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) said that it had compiled a list of the names of 6,964 civilians who had been killed in Syria in 2018, the majority of whom were killed by the Assad regime and its allied Iranian militias.
In a report released on Tuesday, the Network said that the deaths included 1,436 children and 923 women.
According to the report, the Assad regime forces and their allied militias killed 4,162 civilians while Russian forces killed 467 others. It indicated that 1,107 more civilians were killed by other parties to the conflict.
The monitoring group said that the victims included 478 civilians who were killed by Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham and ISIS militant groups and 417 others who were killed in airstrikes by the international anti-ISIS coalition. It added that the PYD militia were responsible for the deaths of 285 civilians while 48 others were killed by other militant groups.
The Network pointed out that 976 people were killed under torture in Syria over the past year, 951 of whom were killed by the Assad regime.
The monitoring group called for an immediate investigation into all deaths in prisons and detention facilities as it called for giving the UN Commission of Inquiry, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and other human rights organizations immediate access to all prisons in Syria. It also called for an immediate action to put an end to all forms of torture in the prisons and detention centers of the Assad regime.
In an earlier report, the Network called upon the UN Security Council to take additional measures following the issuance of resolutions 2139 and 2254. It also stressed the need to refer Syria to the International Criminal Court to hold accountable all those responsible for war crimes and violations of human rights, including the Russian regime.
