As the Assad regime forces and their allied forces are further intensifying the indiscriminate bombardment of residential areas in Idlib province, education officials in Ma’arat al-Nu’man decided to suspend schools in the town on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Local activists in rural Idlib said that the suspension of school might be extended beyond Wednesday and affects 135 schools with 48,553 students.
The suspension of schools came in protest against the constant shelling by regime forces and for the safety of students and educational staff. The decision came one day after a child was killed and other civilians wer wounded in rocket shelling by the Assad regime forces on the town of Khan Sheikhoun in southern rural Idlib on Tuesday.
The education department of the local council in the town of Kafarzeita in northern rural Hama earlier announced it was suspending schools for two days because of the intensified shelling by regime forces and their allies.
Last week, the shelling targeted schools in Kafarzeita while schoolchildren were inside. Four schoolchildren were killed and more were maimed when the shelling directly hit them while they were on their way back home.
The Syrian Coalition earlier condemned the Assad regime’s targeting of schools, calling on the international community to deter further attacks and to hold accountable those responsible for repeated violations against schoolchildren and their families.
The countryside of Hama and Aleppo, and Idlib province has been subjected to intensifying artillery and rocket shelling by the regime forces in recent weeks although the area is covered by the Idlib agreement.
