A group of activists in the Yarmouk camp for Palestinian refugees launched the ‘Shadow of Fallen Hero’ campaign to commemorate the victims of Assad’s killing machine in the camp. The name of the campaign derives from drawing shadows of the victims on the walls in the camp, alongside phrases and slogans that the victims used to chant during the anti-regime demonstrations. Hassan Hassan, who once appeared in the “Yarmouk Youth” film is now a shadow drawn on the walls of the buildings in the camp, beside the shadow activists scrawled “The butterfly effect does not die.” A shadow of Ahmed Sahli, another fallen hero, is drawn with the phrase he used to chant; “we will stay here.” In this innovative way, a group of friends managed to express loyalty to their fallen heroes who left behind a legacy hard to forget. The campaign was launched on April 16, a day before the Day of the Palestinian Prisoners, so that the message is clearly expressed to everyone. Just like in Palestine, Palestinians have been suffering in the prisons of the Assad regime. In addition to death under torture, hundreds of Palestinians in the camp starved to death as a result of the crippling siege imposed on the camp. This form of death is probably the only one which was not experienced by the Palestinians under Israeli occupation. The shadow of Ahmed Taha with the slogan “This Land is Ours” can still be seen on the walls of the camp, in spite of all the suffering and the displacement of the majority of the inhabitants of the camp. The faces of these young people who used to overlook the camp are gone, but the their shadows are still there, reminding everyone of the tragic fate they met for their political, social, cultural activism against the Assad regime.” (Source: Al Hayat)
