The Syrian Interim Government (SIG) condemned the crimes being committed by the Assad regime and its allies against unarmed civilians in eastern Ghouta using all types of internationally banned weapons.
In a statement issued by office of SIG’s head on Tuesday, SIG said that Russia’s repeated use of its veto power on the UN Security Council to block investigations into the use of banned poisonous gasses has encouraged the Assad regime to continue with the killing of the Syrian people.
SIG pointed out that the destruction of houses over the heads of civilians and the displacement of hundreds of families and depriving them of shelter, food and medicine constitute war crimes under international humanitarian law and Article VIII of the Rome Statute.
The statement stressed that the international community and sponsors of the political process bear full responsibility to protect innocent civilians and those who stick to their homes despite the suffocating siege and the policy of starvation and constant bombardment.
The statement called on the United Nations to shoulder its responsibility to put pressure on the Assad regime to open humanitarian crossings and allow the delivery food and medicine to those in need. It underscored that the Syrian people will not accept any political process that does not lead to a full political transition fulfilling the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people.
