Regime forces and the so-called National Defense Forces have continued with the military escalation on the besieged Alwaer district in Homs for the third consecutive day, killing and injuring dozens of civilians in a blatant violation of the ceasefire agreement.
Activists in Alwaer district said that seven airstrikes by regime forces hit the district on Friday, killing six people and injuring dozens more. The pro-regime National Defense Forces shelled the district with dozens of mortar rounds.
A as many as 20 civilians have been killed in the regime’s intensified bombardment on Alwaer district over the past three days while 40 more were injured. The bombardment over the past three days has been the most intense since the truce took effect on December 29, 2016.
Residents trapped in Alwaer district suffer severe shortages of medicines and medical equipment as well as high prices of infant formula due to the blockade regime forces impose on the district. Regime checkpoints besieging the district have repeatedly prevented the ill and injured from leaving the district for treatment.
The Syrian Coalition earlier stressed that the international community and the UN Security Council are obliged to exercise pressure on the Assad regime and its allies; to warn them there will be consequences for their actions and force them to respect international resolutions and meet the requirements of a political solution.
“The Assad regime and its allies continue to pursue a criminal policy aimed at killing and displacing civilians and destroying the country without showing the slightest respect for the ceasefire agreement, thinking that these crimes can break the will of the Syrian people,” the Coalition said.
