SNHR: Over 14,000 Killed under Torture in Assad’s Prisons

The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) said that about 14,235 detainees, including many children and women, have been killed under torture in the prisons of the Assad regime since March 2011.

In a report issued on Friday to mark the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, the Network pointed out that the victims included 177 children and 63 women. It added that the Assad regime is responsible for the overwhelming majority of these deaths.

The report indicated that the victims included 52 people, including a child and two women, who were killed under torture at the hands of the PYD militia. They also included 26 who were killed while in the custody of HTS group, including a child, while 43 others, including a child and a woman, were killed at the hands of other militant groups.

According to the report, at least 33 people, including a woman, have been killed due to torture and medical neglect in the regime’s detention centers since March 22.

The rights group indicated that the Assad regime clearly violated the provisions of the Syrian constitution, the Convention against Torture that Syria ratified in 2004 as well as manipulated laws and legislations in order to protect its forces from any prosecution.

The Network called on the UN General Assembly to resort to the principle of uniting for peace as it called on the UN Security Council to save civilians from torture and ensure the release of the rest of detainees. (Source: SOC’s Media Department)

Preserving independence and national sovereignty and maintaining the Syrian people's unity within the same Syrian soil is one of the critical pillars of the Syrian Coalition. The Coalition aims to overthrow the Assad regime along with all its symbols and pillars. It also aims to dismantle its security apparatus and hold accountable those involved in crimes against Syrians. In addition, it seeks to achieve a transition to a pluralistic, democratic and civil Syria.
