The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) on Sunday called on the UN Security Council to put forward a recommendation to the UN General Assembly to suspend the membership of the Assad regime in response to the atrocious crimes and violations it has been committing against the Syrian people over the past seven years.
The rights group pointed out that the UN General Assembly is still opening its doors for representatives of the Assad regime for the seventh consecutive year and giving them the pulpit to defend the regime’s systematic violations against the Syrian people.
The Assad regime did not abide by any of the UN Security Council resolutions on Syria, the Network said. It added that as per the Charter of the United Nations, the General Assembly can suspend the membership of the regime and withdraw all its privileges at a recommendation by the UN Security Council.
The Network said that the Assad regime will to continue to commit the most heinous crimes against humanity should the UN Security Council fails to submit the recommendation to the UN General Assembly.
On February 22, the Syrian Coalition called for suspending the membership of the Assad regime in the United Nations and expelling the regime’s ambassador from the UN. It called for handing over Syria’s seat at the UN to the Coalition which was recognized as the “legitimate representative” of the Syrian people by the Assembly, the Arab League, and Western countries.
The Coalition urged the UN General Assembly to adopt a resolution to refer perpetrators of war crimes in Syria to the International Criminal Court, chief among them are officials of the regime and its allies. It also called for the imposition of an arms embargo on the regime, taking concrete action to establish a nationwide ceasefire, and receiving Syria’s seat at the UN.
