The Syrian interim government-run provincial councils met on Thursday in their first conference inside Syria and agreed to form a Supreme Council for the provincial councils. Ahmed Qassoum, president-elect of the Supreme Council, said that the move aims to promote the work of the provincial and local sub-councils and to develop plans and political visions for the future of Syria.
Jawad Abu Hatab, member of the Damascus provincial council, said that the importance of this step lies in the new political element which was absent from the provincial councils. Provincial councils from now on will be represented in international forums and conferences on Syria.
Abu Hatab underlined the importance of having political representation for the provincial councils as they represent large segments of the Syrian society.
The Supreme Council consists of the heads of the provincial councils, their deputies, and general secretaries in the provinces.
The meeting was attended by heads and representatives of the Syrian provincial councils of Aleppo, Latakia, Damascus, Rural Damascus, Hama and Idlib. (Source: Al-Souriya Net)
