Syrian activists launched a campaign to disrupt the presidential elections using old TV cartoons that are still remembered by many Syrians until today. Owais al-Shami, one of the campaign organizers, said that the campaign aims to convey to the word the Syrians’ perception of these elections through which Assad seeks to legitimize himself in front of the world public opinion. The campaign uses ridicule to reflect the Syrians’ opinion of the elections and their rejection of it.” Imran al-Zoubi, the regime’s Information Minister, touted the elections as the “first pluralistic elections to be held in Syria,” ignoring the decades-long monopoly by the Assad regime of all aspects of life in Syria. The elections are a replica of the referenda held by the regime in 2000 and 2007, when Bashar al-Assad succeeded his father in power. Al Shami also said that they are distributing anti-regime pamphlets in the regime-held areas. We also record songs and upload them on the “Syria Share” channel on YouTube. The idea of the campaign is based on parodying the slogans used by Assad’s presidential campaign using old Syrian cartoons which many Syrians used to watch.(Source: Syrian Coalition)
