Syrian cartoonist Akram Raslan have died under torture at a Syrian regime’s detention center months after his arrest. Raslan was arrested at his work place in Hama on October 2, 2012 and no information regarding him were acquired since then.
According to a former detainee, Raslan died months after he was detained when his health deteriorated and he was transferred to a hospital where he died there
Raslan was one of the most courageous cartoonists in Syria, his works were known for being very direct in opposing the Syrian regime and its head. He published his drawings from Syria in Arabic newspapers and websites
He stood by the Syrian revolution from day one, and drew more than 300 cartoons that accompanied the early developments of the Syrian revolution
Raslan was born in 1974 in the town of Souran, 18 km to the north of Hama, and holds a bachelor degree from the faculty of art and humanities at Damascus University in 1996. He worked for several Arab newspapers and magazines.
The Syrian Coalition has repeatedly called for putting an end to the Assad regime’s gross violations against detainees, imposition of health control over detention centers and allowing the Red Cross teams to enter prisons and detention centers.
He stresses that the international community’s failure to take urgent steps to hold Assad and his security forces accountable for these systematic crimes is an indirect participation in these crimes. (Source: Syrian Coalition)
