The Syrian Network for Human Rights documented that 176 detainees were tortured to death in the prisons of the Assad regime in March, including two children, two women, a doctor and a nurse. The Network said in its report that all victims were detained without charges and without knowing the reasons for their arrest. Among the victims is the lawyer Ma’an Ghonaimi, who has been detained for 10 months in Damascus. Military police informed his family that he had died in Mid-January last year of stroke. The Network confirms that Ghonaimi died under torture in the Air Force Intelligence branch. The number of those who die under torture in the regime prisons exceeds 500 people a month. The Network calls for UN the Security Council to refer the file of prisoners killed under torture to the International Criminal Court. The Syrian Coalition Syrian and international humanitarian organizations reiterated this call, which is being blocked by Russia and China who shield the Assad regime against any condemnation in the UN Security Council.
