The town of Khan Sheikhoun in rural Idlib is suffering severe shortage of operational schools for the current academic year as bombardment by the Assad regime and Russian air forces destroyed over 50 percent of schools in Idlib province.
Director of the education office in the local council in the town of Khan Sheikhoun Mohammed al-Yusuf told Smart News Network that eight schools in the town are completely destroyed because of the Assad regime and Russian airstrikes. He pointed out that the relentless bombardment has caused partial damage to six more schools since the outbreak of the Syrian revolution in March 2011.
Al-Yousef added that the local council does not have the financial resources to repair school as repairing each one will cost about $ 10,000 USD.
There are around 7,000 students in the town who still go to the partially damaged schools, Al-Yousef said. He noted that as many as 200 teachers quit teaching as most schools in the town are out of service.
Airstrikes by the Assad regime and Russian air forces on schools in the towns and villages on Idlib province have killed and wounded hundreds of civilians as well as caused massive destruction to education and medical facilities.
