The Assyrian Observatory of Human Rights said that unknown gunmen looted Assyrian cathedral in Al-Hasakah on Monday, a day after it damaged by shrapnel shells fired during clashes in its surroundings. The Observatory added that the cathedral, located in regime-controlled central Al Hasaka city, is the center of “Syria’s Diocese of the Assyrian Church of the East.” The Syrian Coalition’s spokesman condemned the looting of the cathedral, stressing that any targeting of places of worship is an act of terrorism and a violation of the Geneva Convention related to the protection of fundamental human rights in the time of war. “These barbaric acts runs in line with the plans pursued by the Assad regime across Syria since the start of the revolution, as it has been deliberately targeting of schools, mosques, churches and monasteries, hospitals and medical relief points and warehouses, as well as residential areas.
