The President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Hadi al-Bahra, emphasized that the European Union’s declared and clear stance remains steadfast in adhering to the “three no’s” as long as irreversible progress in the political process is achieved. He reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to a political solution in line with UN resolutions, noting that France reiterated this position during the recent UN Security Council session.
In an interview with the local newspaper Enab Baladi, al-Bahra stated that the Assad regime’s actions against the Syrian people make it unacceptable for any of the nations supporting the Syrian people to take a step back. He added that the regime has not changed, continuing its violations against civilians in areas under its control and that of its allies, launching aggressive attacks on civilians in the liberated areas, and detaining tens of thousands of Syrians in its prisons.
Al-Bahra pointed out that the Assad regime’s refusal to engage in the political process is evident in its obstruction of any efforts to activate the process or reach a political solution in Syria in accordance with UN resolutions.
He further highlighted that the SOC encourages the international community to take forward steps and recognize that the regime cannot seriously or positively engage in any political process. He explained that past experiences show the regime’s involvement in such processes has been solely to hinder progress.
Al-Bahra called on nations to pressure the regime’s partners and supporters, instead of providing aid or projects that the regime exploits to fund corruption networks. He warned against taking positions that the regime could use to obstruct a political solution and strengthen its ability to evade accountability.
He also urged anyone engaging with the regime to understand that this is the same regime that evades accountability for massacres committed using chemical weapons and barrel bombs against defenseless people. He added that the regime continues its crimes and violations through various means to this day.
