Badr Jamous, President of the Syrian Negotiations Commission, has urged all Arab and international entities to act and engage with Lebanese authorities to halt the decision to forcibly deport defected Syrian soldier Ammar Sairafi back to Syria. He stressed that carrying out this decision would amount to a death sentence, cause immense distress to Sairafi’s family and mother, and strip Syrian refugees in Lebanon of any sense of safety.
Jamous strongly condemned the decision, which was scheduled for execution on Tuesday morning, emphasizing that it violates international law, human rights conventions, and all international resolutions regarding refugees. He called for Sairafi’s protection, an immediate reversal of the deportation decision, and the safeguarding of the rights of all Syrian refugees in Lebanon.
He also appealed to Major General Elias Baysari, Director General of Lebanese General Security, to stop the deportation of Ammar Sairafi, holding Lebanese authorities fully responsible for his life and the risks he could face, including arrest, torture, or even death if forcibly returned to Syria.
Jamous noted that Sairafi defected from Assad’s forces in 2013 and fled to Lebanon after refusing to kill his fellow Syrians. He described the deportation decision as a disgrace to Lebanese authorities, who have ignored the potentially fatal consequences of their actions.
