President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Hadi Al-Bahra, emphasized the significance of the 2024 G7 foreign ministers’ statement, particularly the renewed commitment to the political process in Syria as outlined in UN resolutions. He also underscored the commitment to achieving justice and sustaining humanitarian aid for the Syrian people.
Al-Bahra emphasized that Syrian victims still await international justice, calling for concrete actions which remain absent due to the failure of the international community to exert necessary pressure on the Assad regime. He highlighted the regime’s continuous violations, backed by its supporters, demonstrating its lack of faith in the political process and its persistence in repressive tactics and crimes.
Furthermore, Al-Bahra noted that the ongoing support for UN Security Council Resolutions 2254 and 2118 aligns with Syrian aspirations for freedom, democracy, and justice. However, he cautioned that the sluggish implementation of these resolutions has exacerbated the suffering of the Syrian people and empowered the Assad regime to incite regional crises while perpetrating war crimes and violations against civilians.
During their meeting in Italy, the G7 foreign ministers issued a statement concerning the Middle East, particularly Syria. They affirmed their commitment to the Syrian political process in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254. Additionally, they emphasized the pursuit of justice for victims and the accountability of all actors responsible for international law violations, including international humanitarian and human rights law.
The statement reiterated the imperative to promptly release all arbitrarily detained civilians, disclose the fate of forcibly disappeared individuals, and sustain humanitarian assistance to address the needs of the Syrian people. This aid encompasses early recovery assistance and measures to bolster resilience.
