President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Hadi Al-Bahra, met with the Deputy UN Envoy to Syria, Najat Rushdi, in New York. They discussed the Syrian crisis, the importance of the UN envoy’s team’s role in advancing the political process, and the necessity of activating all provisions of Security Council Resolution 2254.
The two parties focused on the catastrophic conditions experienced by the Syrian people at all levels, particularly the emergency situation facing Syrian refugees in neighboring countries, especially Lebanon, following recent decisions. They also addressed the plight of Syrian detainees and political prisoners in Lebanese prisons.
Al-Bahra presented a paper detailing these issues and proposing practical steps to address the worsening crisis. He emphasized the importance of engaging with the Lebanese government to halt the forced return of Syrians, given that the conditions in Syria still fall short of making the return of refugees voluntary, dignified, and safe in accordance with international standards, which the Lebanese government must adhere to.
They also discussed the importance of early recovery efforts to support Syrians wherever they are inside Syria, ensuring that the Assad regime cannot use these efforts to gain political advantages or monopolize aid.
