President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Hadi Al-Bahra, along with his accompanying delegation, visited the grave of the late astronaut Muhammad Faris at the Martyrs’ Cemetery in the town of Azaz in the Aleppo countryside. They paid tribute to the esteemed Syrian astronaut, who passed away on April 19 at the age of 72 in the Turkish city of Gaziantep.
Al-Bahra was joined by members of the political committee, Ahmad Baccora, and members of the General Assembly, Hussein Al-Raad, and Atef Zureiq. Additionally, last week, he offered condolences in Istanbul at the Atassi House.
Anas Abdah, former President of the Syrian Negotiations Commission and former SOC President, along with the director of the SOC’s office in the city of Gaziantep, also offered condolences in Gaziantep.
Al-Bahra emphasized that the loss of Faris is deeply felt by the Syrian people, and his unwavering support for the Syrian revolution will forever be remembered. He highlighted Faris’s significant achievement as the first Syrian astronaut to venture into space in 1987, becoming the second Arab to do so, and conducting numerous scientific experiments during his space mission.
Fares contributed extensively to research in various fields including industrial, geological, chemical, medical, space monitoring, and remote sensing.
Bravely aligning himself with the Syrian Revolution in 2012, Faris defected from the Assad regime and stood alongside the Syrian people in their struggle for freedom and democracy. As a result, he became a national symbol and held a unique stature among Syrians.
