Secretary-General of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Haytham Rahmeh, has issued a stark warning regarding the actions of the Lebanese authorities, accusing them of colluding with the Assad regime to hand over prisoners in Lebanese prisons to the Assad regime. Rahmeh has emphasized that such actions represent a perilous escalation, potentially culminating in the imprisonment or even death of those handed over to the Assad regime.
In a statement, Rahmeh condemned the Lebanese authorities’ actions as an attempt to evade their domestic crises at the expense of Syrian refugees, directly imperiling their lives. He characterized the transfer of prisoners as a callous trade in human lives and an endorsement of the Assad regime’s egregious violations against deportees.
Rahmeh highlighted the Assad regime’s brutal treatment of refugees, citing numerous reports detailing instances of torture and even murder perpetrated against deportees from Lebanon and other locations. He underscored the urgency of international intervention to safeguard vulnerable individuals who have fled the Assad regime’s brutality and Hezbollah militia’s terrorism in pursuit of safety and stability.
Calling upon the United Nations and its Secretary-General, Rahmeh urged concerted efforts to halt Lebanese violations against Syrian refugees and to raise global awareness of their plight. He emphasized the imperative of upholding the principles of humanity and preserving the fraternal relationship between the Syrian and Lebanese peoples amidst this humanitarian crisis.
