The President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SNC), Hadi al-Bahra, affirmed the SOC’s support for the caretaker government formed under Mohamed al-Bashir. He emphasized that its purpose is to ensure the continued delivery of services, the operation of state institutions, the prevention of collapse, and the safety and security of citizens.
In an interview with Al Arabiya, Al-Bahra said that the SOC is working to secure international support for Bashir’s government.
He highlighted the SOC’s central role in the current situation, noting that the groups of the Syrian National Army—an integral part of the SOC—played a key role in the joint military operations that contributed to liberating parts of Syria. He added that the SOC continues to fully carry out its political responsibilities.
Al-Bahra addressed the distortion of recent SOC statements, clarifying that the SOC remains committed to implementing the remaining provisions of UN Security Council Resolution 2254, particularly Article 4, which outlines a political transition process. He emphasized that this transition is a roadmap to enable the Syrian people to govern themselves. Previously obstructed by the Assad regime, the resolution’s implementation now depends solely on the political, military, and civil forces of the revolution following the regime’s collapse.
Al-Bahra underlined that the resolution represents a shared interest for all Syrians and will lead to a Syrian-led dialogue among revolutionary forces, opposition groups, and all components of Syrian society without exclusion.
He stressed the importance of UN Resolution 2254, which defines the criteria for establishing a transitional governing body, including its tasks, timeline, and inclusive nature, ensuring credibility and non-sectarian governance.
Regarding the resolution’s content, Al-Bahra explained that the negotiation phase between two sides is now irrelevant due to the fall of the regime. With only one party remaining—the revolutionary forces—the second phase of the resolution, focused on the transition toward a new Syria with a democratic system and a modern constitution, remains unchanged.
Addressing communication between the SOC and Military Operations Command, Al-Bahra noted that during the transitional phase and the formation of a transitional governing body, coordination will be strengthened. He stressed the importance of unity and announced efforts to arrange a meeting between the SOC leadership and the Military Operations Command.
Al-Bahra also pointed out that implementing the remaining parts of UN Resolution 2254 would pave the way for lifting sanctions on Syria. He called for lifting sanctions immediately, given the fall of the criminal regime and the flight of its leader. Furthermore, he noted that this would attract support and investments to Syria, which urgently needs assistance from all allies and friends.
