Abdul Majeed Barakat, Vice President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), emphasized the importance of preserving documents and evidence incriminating the Assad regime for committing war crimes against civilians over the past years. He stated that this effort would support the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM) in its investigations and ensure accountability for the criminals responsible for these atrocities.
In a press statement, Barakat highlighted that accountability is one of the most crucial files during the transitional phase, as it is vital to achieving civil peace in the country by ensuring justice for the victims’ families.
Barakat stressed the need to protect governmental institutions and offices, prevent unauthorized access to prisons, detention centers, and torture sites, and safeguard documents, records, and torture tools. This measure is essential until specialized national teams are formed, international missions arrive, and they undertake their assigned duties.
He further explained that protecting and preserving evidence and documents will assist the IIIM in successfully accomplishing its mission, identifying those responsible for the crimes, and holding them accountable through an international framework.
