The Vice President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Abdul Majeed Barakat, emphasized that the forced settlement agreements reached in various regions of Syria have proven to be a complete failure. These agreements exemplify the international community’s failure to address the conflict in Syria seriously, largely due to the absence of a comprehensive political solution that would ensure a permanent and sustainable resolution to the country’s problems and restore security and stability.
Barakat cited the ongoing deteriorating conditions in Daraa, the regime’s bombing of Kanaker in the Damascus countryside last month, and the current situation in Talbiseh in the Homs countryside and Zakiya in the Damascus countryside. He said that the regions which signed forced settlement agreements with the Assad regime have seen no improvement in security, economic, or living conditions. He stressed that there can be no sustainable solution without meeting the Syrian people’s demands for freedom, dignity, and a democratic transition.
Barakat pointed out that the delay in implementing UN resolutions on Syria, most notably the 2012 Geneva Communique and Resolutions 2118 and 2254, has resulted in hundreds of thousands of victims, displaced millions of refugees, and turned Syria into a theater for proxy wars and drug trafficking.
He underscored the urgency of reactivating the political process and pressuring the regime to fully engage in it under United Nations auspices in Geneva, to implement UN Resolution 2254 and begin the political transition steps outlined in the resolution.
