The Vice President of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Abdul Majid Barakat, emphasized the pressing need for UN Security Council members to urgently devise mechanisms to activate the political process in Syria. He called for concrete, binding steps to compel the Assad regime to engage positively with this process and implement UN Security Council Resolution 2254, including the formation of a transitional governing body to save Syria from the brink of collapse.
In a press statement, Barakat said that Bashar al-Assad is still living in denial, perpetuating false claims about terrorist groups, which no longer deceive anyone. He pointed out that it is widely recognized who supports the Iranian militias and Hezbollah’s terrorist group, and who continues to target civilians and civilian infrastructure, especially in recent attacks on Aleppo.
Barakat underscored that the current military operations are a response to the Assad regime’s terrorism, along with Iranian and Hezbollah militias, which has persisted for over 13 years. He explained that these operations aim to deter aggression, halt shelling, and facilitate the return of displaced persons and refugees to their homes. Additionally, they seek to advance the political process and implement UN resolutions on Syria.
Barakat highlighted the unity among Syrians today, stressing their agreement on the importance of transitioning to a new phase that ends their suffering and brings hope after years of waiting in the darkness caused by the regime’s Assad intransigence. The regime continues to reject political solutions, relying instead on a bloody military strategy and the support of sectarian Iranian militias and Hezbollah.
He noted that the recently liberated areas demonstrate high levels of organization and adherence to agreed-upon disciplinary measures among all opposition groups involved in the military operations. These measures ensure respect for the rights of all civilians regardless of their sects, ethnicities, or religions, the preservation of state institutions, humane treatment of captured regime soldiers, and secure defections of officers and personnel from Assad’s forces.
