The Secretary-General of the Syrian National Coalition, Haytham Rahmeh, welcomed recent statements by the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding Syria, describing them as a significant reflection of the situation the country is enduring.
Rahmeh endorsed the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry’s emphasis on the need for the Syrian people, in all their diversity and cultural richness, to be freed from political oppression, tyranny, and terrorism. He highlighted that the SOC is working to fulfill the aspirations of Syrians, who have endured decades under the repressive Assad regime and years of violence and killings orchestrated by the criminal authoritarian regimes of Russia and Iran since 2011.
He pointed out that these dictatorial powers have committed similar atrocities in both Syria and Ukraine, driven by brutal objectives that are hostile to the will of the people, leading to international crises and widespread concerns.
Rahmeh underscored the importance of collaborative efforts to achieve justice and hold accountable those responsible for war crimes in Syria and Ukraine, bringing them to international courts to secure justice for the victims. He also reiterated that a resolution to the Syrian crisis must be based on the Geneva Communique of 2012 and UN Security Council Resolution 2254. Rahmeh called on the global community to support these measures and help realize the Syrian people’s aspirations for freedom and democracy.
