Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) President Hadi al-Bahra said that the regime and its allies’ intensified shelling of civilians’ homes, farms, and facilities demonstrates their insistence on escalation, endangering hundreds of thousands of civilians in the Aleppo and Idlib countryside and causing new waves of displacement.
Al-Bahra emphasized that the Assad regime’s and its supporters’ continued war crimes and systematic oppression of civilians are major causes behind the mass displacement and forced migration of over half of Syria’s population.
He reiterated that Syria remains unsafe for the voluntary return of refugees and will continue to be so until the international community takes responsibility by implementing mechanisms for accountability, taking decisive action to halt these ongoing crimes that threaten civilian lives, regional security, and exacerbate Syria’s humanitarian crisis.
The Syrian Response Coordinators reported that civilian displacement from villages and towns near conflict zones has resumed after a brief pause that had allowed some families to return. The renewed wave of displacement is attributed to continued military escalation and increased targeting of residential areas and farmlands.
According to the Response Coordinators, civilians are now moving toward relatively safer villages, towns, and camps away from conflict zones. The recent displacement includes over 37 villages and towns in western Aleppo and eastern and southern Idlib. Initial assessments indicate that within 48 hours, more than 1,843 individuals have fled the area, with women and children comprising 81% of the displaced population.
