Haytham Rahmeh, Secretary-General of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), welcomed statements by Senator Michael McCaul, Chair of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee, rejecting any attempts to normalize relations with the Assad regime, calling it a “strategic error and a moral stain.”
In a press statement, Rahmeh emphasized that the Assad regime has committed horrific crimes against civilians and has become one of history’s most notorious criminals. He warned that normalizing relations with the Assad regime would severely harm the interests of countries involved, as it carries a damaging reputation.
Rahmeh further noted that the Assad regime has never served Syria’s interests and cannot be expected to care for those of other nations. He added that Assad’s actions are marked by deceit, delay, and dishonesty, both in domestic and foreign policy.
Rahmeh stressed the importance of Washington continuing to deter any attempts to rehabilitate the Assad regime, urging a renewed push for political solutions in accordance with UN resolutions on Syria, particularly the Geneva Communique of 2012 and UN Resolutions 2118 and 2254. He underscored that these steps are essential for a political transition that fulfills the Syrian people’s aspirations for freedom, dignity, and democracy.
In a post on X, U.S. Senator Michael McCaul expressed “disappointment” over reports that the European Union is considering appointing a special envoy to Syria. He said that such a move will not help security and stability.
“I urge the EU to reverse course. The creeping normalization with the Assad regime is a strategic error and a moral stain. This is exactly why Congress needs to enact the Assad Regime Anti-Normalization Act that includes the Caesar Act reauthorization before the end of the year. I will continue working to make this happen,” McCaul added.
