The political committee of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) held its regular meeting last Thursday to discuss the latest on the ground developments and the political situation in Syria. They reviewed reports from offices, departments, and working groups, and addressed the dangers of expanding regional crises and their impact on the situation in Syria.
Hadi al-Bahra, SOC’s President, provided a briefing on his recent tour to the liberated areas in Tal Abyad, Ras al-Ayn, and Jindires. He updated the local residents on the latest political developments related to Syria and the potential challenges and opportunities arising from regional and global events. He also listened to their needs, living conditions, and the difficulties they face.
Al-Bahra also spoke about his recent visit to the Turkish capital, Ankara, where he held separate meetings with the Turkish Foreign Ministry and a high-level delegation from the U.S. State Department. These meetings were part of the Syrian Negotiations Commission’s efforts to discuss updates on the political process and ways to activate it to implement UN resolutions in Syria.
Badr Jamous, President of the Syrian Negotiation Commission, participated in the meeting and gave a comprehensive briefing on the latest meetings and activities of the Commission, as well as the preparations being made for the upcoming United Nations General Assembly meetings in New York at the end of this month.
The Coalition’s Vice President, Abdul Majid Barakat, provided an overview of his tasks and activities. He also discussed the ceremony honoring top-performing students in the 2024 high school exams in the liberated areas, in addition to a meeting held at the headquarters of the Liberation and Construction Movement, accompanied by members of the SOC and the Vice President of the Local Council of Afrin. During the meeting, they emphasized the importance of supporting official institutions and rallying around them during the current phase.
Additionally, Vice President Abdul Hakim Bashar presented a report on his various meetings with Syrian national figures from different political movements and Syrian activists residing in European countries. He informed them about the latest updates on the political process and the role of the Coalition in the current stage.
The attendees also discussed the political file, particularly the war on Gaza and the potential for it to spread to Lebanon. They also discussed the security breach by the Israeli occupation of the communications systems used by Hezbollah militia, which could mark a real turning point in the history of wars.
The upcoming U.S. elections and the potential impacts these elections may have on major international issues were also discussed.
