Two young men from Daraa province have died under torture in the Sednaya military prison, which is controlled by the Assad regime, after being detained for nearly two years.
According to the Ahrar Horan, a local activists group, the two men, Habis Al-Shaman and Uday Abu Khushrif, were killed under torture in Assad’s prisons after two years of detention.
The group pointed out that Al-Shaman was from the village of Sha’ara in the Al-Lajat area and was once a member of the Omari Brigades, once affiliated with the Free Syrian Army. He was arrested by regime forces despite signing a forced reconciliation agreement and returning to civilian life.
The group also reported that Al-Shaman’s family received his body from regime forces on Saturday, September 21st.
Uday Abu Khushrif, from the town of Al-Shabrak in western Daraa, had also been detained in Sednaya prison for over two years. His family received news of his death under torture in the prison last Saturday.
The group emphasized that people close to the victims confirmed they were subjected to systematic torture that led to their deaths after months of suffering.
Despite numerous international calls to release detainees and disclose the fate of those forcibly disappeared, the Assad regime refuses to comply and continues its arrests without pause.
The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) reiterated its call for the international community to take responsibility for Syrian detainees in Assad’s prisons and to take actions that ensure their release, protection, and accountability for those responsible for the illegal and criminal acts committed against them.
The SOC warned against continued inaction and disregard for Syrian lives, holding that anyone who refrains from assisting them is complicit in the crimes committed against them.
