The Syrian Women’s Authority, in partnership with the Stabilization Support Unit, convened a meeting on April 26 to review its ongoing activities and discuss strategies for collaboration with the working groups of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC). The primary objective was to bolster the presence and engagement of Syrian women, integrating them into decision-making processes, and amplifying the voices of both men and women in forums addressing Syria-related matters.
The meeting was attended by Dima Moussa, Vice President of SOC, Basma Muhammad, Coordinator of the Syrian Women’s Authority and member of the political committee, Berwin Remi, SOC member, as well as other members of the Authority and several Syrian women actively involved in public affairs. Additionally, Munther Sellal, Executive Director of the Stabilization Support Unit, and a representative from the French foreign ministry participated.
Also in attendance were Abdul Majeed Barakat, SOC’s Vice President and Coordinator of the Unions and Associations Working Group, Naziha Akdeniz, Coordinator of Civil Society Organizations Working Group and member of the political committee, and Ahmad Baccora, Coordinator of the Refugees and Displaced Persons Working Group and member of the political committee. Each provided an overview of their respective working group’s activities and addressed inquiries from participants.
It was decided to hold separate sessions with each working group to delve deeper into their initiatives and explore ways to harness Syrian resources to enhance their effectiveness in addressing the needs of Syrians. Discussions also revolved around early recovery efforts and the plans for the establishment of a trust fund to support related projects, resulting in a set of recommendations and proposals.
Participants were briefed on the activities of SOC’s working groups, underscoring the importance of collaboration between the Women’s Authority and these groups to overcome obstacles and maximize the utilization of Syrian resources.
In conclusion, several recommendations were formulated for the Syrian Women’s Authority and SOC, including the scheduling of regular meetings between the Authority and SOC’s working groups to elevate the role of Syrian women through increased participation and broader consultation with all segments of Syrian society, including civil society organizations, unions, and associations.
