Arrest, torture, and murder are some of the tactics that the Assad regime has employed since it came to power in Syria, intentionally spreading terror and sowing fear in the hearts of Syrian people.
With the start of the Syrian revolution, the Assad regime brought this behavior to brutal and unprecedented levels of torture and killing in an attempt to break the will of the people and its demands for freedom and dignity.
The Syrian people, however, has carried on with their struggle despite the complicity of several states in supporting the Assad regime, and despite the total inaction as well as the unexpected and incomprehensible failure of the international community to assume its responsibilities.
The International Day in Support of Victims of Torture comes as new phots of victims who died under torture in the prisons of the Assad regime were published online. The photos show the horrors the detainees have endured in this death journey. Caesar’s images documented only two years of the life of the revolution as tens of thousands are still held in the prisons of the tyrant and whose cries send an appeal to all the free people of the world to take action to save them.
The Syrian Opposition Coalition appeals to the free world to assume its responsibilities with regards to holding the criminals accountable and to force the regime and its backers to release detainees. It stresses the need for the UN Security Council to follow up on its relevant resolutions, especially the provisions relating to the arbitrary detention and torture of detainees. It recalls the terrible conditions and circumstances in which tens of thousands of detainees are enduring, namely the brutal methods of torture, starvation and abuses.
The rights of peoples are not subject to statute of limitations. Justice will inevitably prevail. There is no alternative to referring the violations in Syria, including the torture, to the International Criminal Court to punish those responsible for those violations and for all war crimes and crimes against humanity that has been committed in Syria since 2011.
