The Assad regime’s forces and their allies committed a new war crime against civilians in the village of Al-Fu’ah in the Idlib countryside on Monday, resulting in the death of civilians civilians and injuring 12 others, including women and children. The attack involved direct artillery shelling on residential homes, which also targeted several other towns in the Idlib and Aleppo countryside simultaneously.
The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) affirms that, amidst significant regional tensions, the Assad regime continues its atrocious crimes against civilians, taking advantage of international distraction and the prevailing impunity due to the lack of effective international mechanisms to protect civilians in liberated areas. The SOC emphasizes that the region’s security hinges on removing the threats posed by the Assad regime and its allied militias, which have been inciting crises and committing massacres for 13 years.
The SOC calls on the international community to condemn this war crime committed by Assad’s forces with the assistance of Iranian and Lebanese militias, and to establish an effective international mechanism to protect civilians, expel terrorist militias, and hold the Assad regime accountable for its extensive record of war crimes and crimes against humanity. The SOC also calls for the enforcement of a political solution in accordance with UN Security Council Resolutions 2254 (2015) and 2118 (2013) to fulfill the aspirations of the Syrian people and bring an end to their suffering.
