Mohammad Salim Al-Khatib, a member of the political committee of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), has warned about the Assad regime’s efforts to facilitate the entry of Hezbollah militants and their families into Syria. He noted that this may be a continuation of the demographic change project that the regime and Iran initiated years ago.
In a press statement, Al-Khatib emphasized that welcoming Lebanese civilian refugees who have not participated in crimes or violations against Syrians is a humanitarian act that no Syrian would hesitate to do. Syrians, he added, have a history of extending aid to people from all countries that have faced crises and wars.
However, Al-Khatib cautioned that the Assad regime may exploit the current Israeli aggression on Lebanon as an opportunity to settle Hezbollah militia families in Syria, thus reinforcing its military presence and advancing the demographic change project aimed at securing control over the country.
Al-Khatib further explained that the regime might take advantage of Hezbollah’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon by providing housing for their militants in the homes of displaced Syrians. He warned that this could establish a new reality, preventing Syrian refugees from returning to their homes in the future, and complicating efforts to implement UN resolutions on Syria and achieve a political solution in line with these resolutions.
