Two years have passed since the deadly attack which was launched by the Russian jets killing 38 people, including 20 children and six women, when multiple airstrike hit the town of Urem Al-Kubra in western rural Aleppo this day in 2018.
The attack was part of a brutal onslaught the Assad regime forces, backed by Russian aerial forces and Iranian militias, launched in the provinces of Aleppo, Hama, and Idlib in violation of the ‘de-escalation zone’ agreement.
These atrocious crimes require a response that go beyond expressions of condemnation and concern. Concrete action needs to be taken to prevent a repeat of these crimes, ensure accountability, and compensate the victims.
The Syrian people will never forget how an aggressor country killed their children, displaced their families and destroyed their homes in support of a criminal dictator.
The Syrian Opposition’s Coalition’s (SOC) legal committee and several independent local and international human rights organizations continue to gather evidence on war crimes in Syria in order to bring criminals to justice and refer this issue to the International Criminal Court.
It is imperative that the international community assume its responsibilities with regards to the situation in Syria by ensuring enforcement of UN resolutions and bringing about a genuine political solution in accordance with the Geneva Communique of 2012.
