The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) held a virtual meeting with a group of Syrian researchers from the eastern region and those focusing on Syrian affairs to discuss the situation in the region and its future within the framework of the Syrian issue.
The meeting brought together SOC’s President Nasr al-Hariri, VP and Coordinator of the Al-Jazira and Euphrates Committee, Oqab Yahya, VP Ruba Habboush, and members of the political committee.
They discussed the problems in Al-Jazira and the Euphrates region, the popular protests which were triggered by the assassination of Sheikh Mutashar al-Hafl, the distribution of local forces in the region, and international and regional actors.
They stressed that addressing the problems in this region should be done with the national framework, stressing that this region is an integral part of Syria as they reject plans for federalization, division, and fragmentation of the region.
Moreover, participants discussed a set of proposals to work on in the months to come that would preserve the integrity of the Syrian territory; safeguard the rights of all social components of the region; ensure the return the IDP to their areas; and allow them to enable them to manage their areas by themselves.
They also stressed the importance of continued communication and coordination in order to follow up on work on proposals and develop them as well as holding further workshops.
