The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) welcomes the final statement of the Arab Ministerial Contact Committee on Syria, held on December 14 in Aqaba, Jordan. The statement reflects sincere and vital support for the aspirations of the Syrian people regarding an inclusive, peaceful, Syrian-led political transition. This process would involve all Syrian political and social forces, including women, youth, and civil society, ensuring fairness and inclusivity. This transition should be under the auspices of the United Nations and the Arab League, aligned with the principles, objectives, and mechanisms of UN Security Council Resolution 2254. This includes the formation of a transitional governing body through Syrian consensus, and initiating steps outlined in the resolution to move from the transitional phase to a new political system. Such a system must fulfill the aspirations of all Syrians through free and fair elections, supervised by the United Nations, based on a new constitution approved by the Syrian people, within a specified timeline and in accordance with the mechanisms established by the resolution.
The SOC also underscores the importance of the statement’s emphasis on the transitional phase, which it describes as a “delicate stage that necessitates comprehensive national dialogue and the solidarity of the Syrian people across all their components, factions, and political and social forces, to build a free, secure, stable, and unified Syria that the Syrian people deserve after long years of suffering and sacrifice.”
The SOC expresses its gratitude and appreciation to the countries participating in the meeting and to the Arab League for supporting the Syrian people’s aspirations.
