The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) extends its gratitude to Qatar, Turkey, the United States, the United Kingdom, the European Union, particularly France and Germany, for their favorable involvement and focus on accountability in Syria, following the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons’ determination of the Assad regime’s culpability for the use of chlorine in a 2018 attack on the town of Douma in rural Damascus. The attack resulted in the loss of numerous civilian lives and left many others injured.
The SOC underscores the necessity for these actions to be accompanied by initiatives to bring justice to the Syrian people, who have suffered thousands of atrocities at the hands of the Assad regime and its Russian and Iranian allies. It highlights the significance of implementing UN Security Council Resolution 2118 and imposing measures against the Assad regime under Chapter 7, due to its repeated use of chemical weapons against the Syrian population.
Furthermore, the Assad regime, in addition to being a danger to the Syrian people through its bombing, repression, and crimes, has become a threat to global security through the proliferation of illegal drugs and militias, and its support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, including reports of providing explosive experts to perpetrate further crimes against the Ukrainian people. Therefore, holding the Assad regime accountable and bringing about its removal will contribute to enhancing international peace and security and promoting global stability.
