The Syrian National Coalition’s (SOC) political committee member, Muhammad Yahya Maktabi, welcomed the recent report by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) that established the responsibility of the Assad regime for the 2018 chlorine attack in Douma. He pointed out that this is not a new issue as many international reports have already proven the regime’s use of chemical weapons against the Syrian people.
Maktabi emphasized that the OPCW report will tighten the screws on the regime and prevent it from acting with impunity. He also stated that it should make countries reconsider their plans to reengage with the regime. He believes that any relationship with the Assad regime will only bring harm, crisis, and illegal drugs.
Maktabi stressed that the rehabilitation of the regime is impossible and that there must be international pressure to advance the political process and bring about a political transition. He added that the regime’s crimes are not limited to Syria and its people, but also affect neighboring countries and Europe through the smuggling of illegal drugs.
Maktabi thanked the Syrian communities in the diaspora, especially those in the US, for their continuous efforts to support the Syrian people and tighten the screws on the Assad regime. He also mentioned that the SOC’s Legal Committee works with human rights organizations to document the crimes of the regime and present them as evidence in relevant meetings. The evidence will also be used in letters to foreign countries to strengthen the position of the SOC and its evidence.
