On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) emphasizes the importance of protecting women from all forms of violence as a fundamental pillar of any society. The SOC prioritizes the protection of Syrian women and the safeguarding of their rights in a state for which Syrians have been striving for years. It underlines that Syrian women have been, and continue to be, victims of the repressive practices employed by the authoritarian regime in its war against the Syrian people.
This occasion also serves as a reminder of the grave violations committed by the Assad regime against women and the broader Syrian population. These violations, which include torture, displacement, and physical and psychological harm, amount to war crimes. They place an obligation on the international community to ensure the protection of Syrian women and men and to accelerate the political resolution needed to alleviate Syria’s many interconnected tragedies and crises. This can only be achieved by implementing United Nations Security Council Resolutions 2254 (2015) and 2118 (2013). Furthermore, holding the Assad regime and any other party that committed violations against Syrian women and the Syrian people accountable is a pressing necessity that cannot be overlooked. Accountability is essential to achieving lasting peace in Syria.
The SOC reaffirms its commitment to women’s rights and equality and expresses its pride in Syrian women who continue to struggle with courage and dedication. Despite the hardships they endure, they strive for a homeland where Syrians—women and men alike—can live in freedom, justice, democracy, and dignity, with full respect for human rights.
