The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) strongly condemns the horrific massacre committed by Iranian terrorist militias in the southern Deir Ezzor province, near the village of Kabajib on Wednesday. The brutal attack resulted in the tragic loss of more than 40 lives, with dozens more injured or missing. The victims were searching for truffles to sustain their livelihoods. This massacre constitutes a grave war crime, demanding a resolute international response to ensure accountability for both the perpetrators and those who facilitated their presence in Syria.
The SOC calls upon the United Nations and the Security Council to initiate transparent international investigations into this atrocity and to unequivocally condemn it. Additionally, the SOC highlights the urgent need to address the serious threat posed by Iranian militias and their multinational affiliates operating within areas controlled by the Assad regime. These militias have inflicted numerous crises upon Syria, collaborating with the regime in drug trafficking, perpetrating war crimes and crimes against humanity against innocent civilians, and promoting divisive sectarian agendas aimed at altering the nation’s identity.
The SOC underscores the imperative for the international community to take decisive action against the Assad regime and its backers to halt their ongoing atrocities and violations against Syrians across all regions of the country. Failure to implement a political solution in accordance with UN Resolution 2254 (2015) will only exacerbate the suffering of Syrians and precipitate further crises at local, regional, and international levels.
