The murder of activist and journalist Hussein Khattab in the town of Al-Bab represents a heinous, reprehensible crime. It sounded an additional alarm for the security situation in some parts of rural Aleppo, where civilians are exposed to frequent terrorist attacks by the Assad regime and terrorist militias.
This heinous crime was carried out by masked men who managed to flee on a motorcycle, with reports that the victim was previously assaulted, received death threats and informed the security apparatuses about them.
We offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Khattab as we stress the need to spare no effort to bring the perpetrators to justice. We expect all institutions to cooperate in this task and to arrest all those involved as soon as possible.
As such pivotal moments will likely determine the course of events for years to come, we have to rise to the level of the responsibilities, and realize the seriousness of this crime. Every journalist, media activist, revolutionary, fighter, and an official can be a target for these criminal gangs that are no different from their sponsors and the parties that stand behind them.
We have already instructed the relevant authorities to launch an urgent investigation into the crime in order to identify the perpetrators and hold them accountable. We expect tangible results as soon as possible through a transparent investigation.
