The Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC) holds the United Nations responsible for what is happening in al-Rukban refugee camp where Syrian refugees are living in tragic conditions as a result of severe shortages of food, water, baby formula and medical equipment. These catastrophic conditions are due to the Assad regime’s tightened blockade, the United Nations’ failure to respond to the pleas being made by residents of the camp, and the latest decision to halve the amount of water supplying the camp despite the heatwave scorching the region.
The SOC calls for an urgent international intervention to put an end to the Assad regime’s blockade on the camp in order to save the lives of thousands of civilians who were displaced by the regime. It also calls on the United Nations to assume its responsibilities and work effectively to ensure a decent life for thousands of households living in the camp.
The displaced people in al-Rukban camp are now facing two serious dangers: slow death due to the lack of water, food and medicine, and the danger of arrest, enforced disappearance, torture and murder if they return to the regime-held areas. Abandoning residents of the camp in these dire conditions amounts to a crime, with those keeping silent about this tragedy are equally responsible as those committing the crime.
